The Adoption Doula

This comes from a place of thoughtfulness and consideration for all parties involved; birth mother, the adoptive family as well as the adoptee. 

By nurturing both the birth mother and the waiting family, you nurture the baby and by nurturing the baby you are promoting love, truth and compassion that will last a lifetime. This is a life changing process for everyone; time and support while incorporating the Doula model can help to create and sustain a positive, healthy environment for all parties involved.   

This is a great addition to the adoption community; it acknowledges the realities of the transitions and walks with them while providing support and compassion.

 

The adoption doula is an extension of both the birth and postpartum doula. What makes the adoption doula unique is the population being served and as a result a new model was created. The adoption doula is familiar with the language, resources to provide the client and how to remain neutral between the birth mother and the adoptive family. 

This model provides additional prenatal visits, “birth box”, and additional time with the birth mother after delivery and a minimum of 6 months availability postpartum. For the adoptive/waiting family the adoption doula is available to be retained as soon as the decision to adopt is initiated. 

The adoption doula stays with them to provide emotional support through this process; we help with preparing for baby to come home, help with breastfeeding or alternatives to breastfeeding.
